Office of the Registrar

In this group project, I participated in a human factors review of UConn's Office of the Registrar's website and created a new design for the office based on user research. It included interviewing the office and students to gain empathy, defining the problem, reviewing the current design based of heuristics, creating user personas & needs, designing the new layouts, creating a functioning prototype in Adobe XD, and running a usability tests of the new site vs. the old one.

Step 1 - Review of Old Website

UConn Registrar Old Website
  • Moderated Usability Tests
  • Activity Analysis
  • Link Analysis

User Feedback from Usability Tests...

  • Users didn’t realize the carousel items were links or payed attention to them
  • The full screen width and height of the drop down menu for the students & faculty tab on the main navigation annoyed users for two reasons
  • It gives illusion of a static new page and covered the rest of the home page content
  • Full page menu disappeared easily by accident when mouse goes to side of page
  • Users can't find instructions on class registration quickly
  • Users are confused what the Office of the Registrar does
  • Users can’t find the Office of the Registrar contact info quickly
  • Users of the site are overwhelmed with links on the home page and tabs, increasing the amount of time spent reaching their goal

Activity Analysis

Google Analytics Activity Analysis

The short pageview duration of the registrar website suggest how users don’t see all the carousel sliders. It also tells us that the homepage must communicate what the registrar is, their products and services, and how the registrar can help them/direct them to their next steps in about five seconds.

Link Analysis

Google Analytics Activity Analysis
  • Calendar most visited function of website
  • Final Exams second most popular page
  • Contact us is a very popular page - it needs it’s own link in navigation
  • Transcripts, Grades, Dean’s List- are prominent pages

Step 2 - User Research

User Survey

Goal: Receive information from students on what they use the Registrar website for, if their needs are met, how user friendly the site is, and what can be improved

Convenience sample

Sample size: 14

Results:

  • Final exams, academic calender, forms, and courses/requirements most frequent uses of registrar website
  • About half of the users are neutral or not satisfied with the current website

Proto Persona: Shannon

Skyfive CT User

Traits

  • Is a freshman international student
  • In the ACES program, looking for a major
  • Doesn’t clearly know how to register for classes and the course tools available
  • Is uninformed of important academic calendar dates

Needs for the Site

  • Needs to know available student services
  • Needs to be able to easily contact the registrar office
  • Needs to be able to browse through majors, browse through classes, and see course requirements
  • Needs to be able to get information to transfer her credits
  • Needs to see important dates for enrolling and dropping classes, etc.
  • Needs to be able to quickly see final exam schedule
  • Needs to be able to get access to forms

Card Sorting

Results

  • Students focused on grouping based on the uses rather than the users
  • Grouping based on the users on the main navigation is too broad and interpreted differently

Step 3 - Prototyping

After analyzing all of the data from the review of the old website and user research, I came up with a recommended new website layout for a couple of the most visited pages. I then created a working prototype of the new design in Adobe XD and ran user testing.

Adobe XD Prototype

Adobe XD Prototype
Adobe XD Prototype
  • New Registrar website more visually appealing and user friendly
  • Icons are easy to recognize and helpful when navigating
  • Categories for drop down menus are appropriate
  • The organization of majors page is more informative and applicable
  • Old Registrar website carousel on homepage was skimmed over and not deeply looked at for information. On new site can that information is more accessible

Some Adopted Changes on Live Site

UConn Registrar New Website
  • Created more hierarchy on home page and made less cluttered i.e. only four call to action buttons based on highest user needs
  • Removed the giant drop down menu for students and faculty- made into their own pages
  • Removal of the carousel
  • Created a sub navigation in the sidebar based off of categories discovered through card sorting
  • Placed contact link in the main navigation
  • Put registration and forms tab in the top menu
  • Added a section on home page describing what the Office of the Registrar does
  • Addition of Dean’s List link on home page
